SM, ASTM D-2827 Standards

Physicochemical Properties

SM is an organic compound formed by replacing one hydrogen atom with benzene, with conjugation between electron of vinyl and benzene ring. It is insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol & ether and gradually undergoes polymerization and oxidation when exposed in air. It is a colorless oily liquid with aromatic smell, a melting point of 145℃, a freezing point of -30.6℃ and a flash point of 31.11℃.

Main Purposes

Most importantly, it is used as rubber and plastic monomer to produce styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), polystyrene and foamed polystyrene; also, to produce engineering plastics for difference purposes by copolymerizing with other monomers, e.g., ABS resin which is widely used in manufacturing of various of household appliances and industry, by copolymerizing with acrylonitrile and butadiene; SAN, a resin with impact resistance and good gloss, by copolymerizing with acrylonitrile; SBS, a thermoplastic rubber that is widely used as modifier of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene, by copolymerizing with butadiene.

SM is mainly used for producing SM series resin and styrene butadiene rubber, serves as one of the raw materials for producing ion exchanging resin and pharmaceuticals, and can be used in such sectors as pharmacy, dye, fertilizer and ore dressing etc.
